Apple Expands Self-Service Repair for Mac

Apple Expands Self-Service Repair for Mac, Introduces Diagnostics, and Updates System Configuration

Apple today unveiled a significant expansion of its Self-Service Repair program to include MacBook Pro and iMac models powered by the M3 chip, starting today. Since its inception in April 2022, the Self-Service Repair initiative has enabled customers to access the same manuals, genuine Apple parts, and tools available at Apple Store locations and through Apple Authorized Service Providers.

In a further development, Apple will introduce Apple Diagnostics for Self-Service Repair to MacBook Pro and iMac models equipped with the M3 chip in the U.S., starting early next month. This service, which was rolled out last year for iPhone and Mac, allows customers to perform troubleshooting sessions akin to those conducted by Apple Authorized Service Providers and Independent Repair Providers. These diagnostics sessions enable users to assess their devices for optimal part functionality and performance, as well as to identify parts that may require repair.

Additionally, Apple is set to update the System Configuration process for all Mac models, enhancing the efficiency of the repair process. With this update, Mac users will no longer be required to contact the Self-Service Repair support team to complete the final step of a repair. However, support will remain available for those who need assistance. This streamlined process is expected to be rolled out early next month in all countries where Self-Service Repair is offered.

The expansion of the Self-Service Repair program is a testament to Apple’s commitment to broadening repair access, a move that is beneficial for both users and the environment by extending the lifespan of its products. While the program empowers users to undertake repairs, Apple underscores that for the majority of users without experience in repairing electronic devices, seeking services from a professional authorized repair provider equipped with certified technicians and genuine Apple parts remains the safest and most reliable option.

Over the past five years, Apple has significantly increased the number of service locations that have access to genuine Apple parts, tools, and training. This includes over 5,000 Independent Repair Providers and a global network of approximately 5,000 Apple Authorized Service Providers, ensuring widespread access to high-quality repair services.
