China has made headlines by unveiling the world’s first fully AI-powered hospital, known as “Agent Hospital.” Developed by Tsinghua University, this virtual China AI hospital is staffed by 42 AI doctors and 4 AI nurses across 21 medical departments.
Agent Hospital operates entirely in a virtual environment, simulating real-world medical scenarios. The AI doctors have demonstrated remarkable capabilities, diagnosing and treating over 10,000 patients within days—a task that would take human doctors years to accomplish. Notably, these AI agents achieved a 93.06% accuracy rate on the MedQA dataset, a benchmark for U.S. medical licensing exams. This level of performance suggests that AI can handle complex medical cases with a high degree of precision.
Beyond patient care, Agent Hospital serves as a training platform for medical students. By interacting with AI-generated patients, students can gain experience with a wide range of medical conditions in a risk-free setting. A team of Chinese medical researchers has expressed concerns about the widespread use of DeepSeek’s AI models in hospitals. They warn that overreliance on AI could lead to clinical safety and privacy risks, especially if the AI generates plausible but incorrect outputs. Additionally, the responsibility for verifying AI-generated diagnoses may place additional burdens on clinicians, particularly in time-sensitive situations.
The researchers also highlight the challenges of deploying AI models on-site to mitigate security and privacy risks. Many healthcare facilities may lack the necessary cybersecurity infrastructure, potentially exposing sensitive patient data to breaches.
